MILKWEED Blog
The novel Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli is a sad, funny, informative, emotionally impacting, and utterly amazing book, suprisingly only 208 pages. The story tells of a young boy who has no official name, so he will be known as Misha. Misha is small, he is fast, stu-id, and he is silly. He is growing up in the Holocaust and he steals everything he can get his hands on. Misha is discovered by another boy named Uri, who takes him too meet the other boys. When the bombs drop, everyone except Uri is put in the ghetto. Where Misha and his new friend Janina sneak out, steal food, and become best friends. Misha grows up and faces numerous hardships, of which are impossible to tell in a mere 4-5 sentences. The main character ,Misha, is a very heroic character.
Without Misha, Janina, Mr. Miligram, and Uncle Sherpsle would all have died in the ghetto. Misha helped find food, which he smuggles. Misha helped Janina and the orphans survive by keeping them fed. When Misha is shot in the ear by Uri, his friend, for the second time, he is left for dead. After all the deportation trains have left, along with Janina, he begins his journey for her. He is kept on a farm as a slave for three years with nothing to eat but pig slop, and never complains about it.Misha makes friends with the mice and once the war is over he wanders and steals again, as everything is back to normal. He grows up and has a kid, who he doesn’t meet until the kid is 25, by then he has grandchildren. This book is an outstanding read and one who hasn’t read it, needs to!
(There is A LOT to tell, and if I were to write a 4 paragraph summary instead of a 4 sentence one, I would)

Boy of the Painted Cave by Justin Denzel has 158 pages of action, adventure, and tragedy. In the book Boy of the Painted Cave, a young hunter-gatherer named Tao dreams of becoming a cave painter. Tao draws in the dirt on rocks and in his mind, he sees images of animals in the sky and in the world around him, he is very artistic. Unfortunately, it is against the law of his clan, and other clans to draw or paint, unless you are a chosen one. Tao wonders about his mom and dad, if they were important he could have a chance at becoming a cave painter, but he has no proof or trace of parents, he is just Tao a boy with a bad foot. Tao wanders off and finds a place known as the slough, it is also a taboo to visit the Slough, but Tao thinks that is wrong, for there is plenty of game on the Slough. In the Slough Tao meets a wolf dog who he helps and names Ram, it is also a taboo to hunt with wolf dogs but Tao does it anyway. Tao lives alone until he comes across a man watching him, for it is Graybeard, the wise, old, shaman of all the clans. Tao draws in private and receives lessons from Graybeard as the three of them, Tao, Ram, and Graybeard have many adventures. One day Tao is caught with Ram and they run off in to the forest, where Tao goes to get Ram and he discovers Graybeard, sick and dying. Graybeard gives instructions to Tao to draw in the secret cavern, which is another taboo. Tao is caught in the secret cavern and is forced to face Saxon, the sacred bull, those who survive are not liars and those who die are believed to have lied, no one has survived… Tao uses Graybeards techniques to defeat Saxon and is declared the new cave painter of the clans, and Volt admits he is Tao’s father, after Graybeard is found dead in the forest. The story would not be the same about the ever so beastly Ram.
Ram is a Vicious fighter, and a main character in Boy of the Painted Cave. The story would not be the same without Ram because Tao might have starved to death, or been trampled by mammoths. Tao would have never found Graybeard and would not have become the cave painter without Ram. Ram is a beast because he takes down a mammoth and a bull and proves to Volt that wolf dogs are not pure evil. Ram is definitely a main character in Boy of the Painted Cave.
Huge literary elements in Boy of the Painted cave are the conflicts. One of the largest conflicts is a character vs. character conflict between Tao and Volt. Tao and Volt have many different opinions, Tao thinks wolf dogs are great to hunt with and are good friends too, and Volt highly disliked them. Volt thinks it is wrong to hunt in the slough because he was attacked by a hyena thinking it was a wolf dog, there. Tao thought Volt is a jerk and too strict and mean. Volt disliked Tao because Volt thought Tao was forgetful and thought he was just slowing him down with Tao’s bad foot. For most of the story the main conflict was between Tao and Volt, they disliked each other very much.

Hatchet blog
El numero sixteen-o
Hatchet, a book with 195 pages of realistic fiction survival and drama, is written by three-time “Newberry Honor” author, Gary Paulsen. Brian Robeson is going through some tough times; he saw his mother and another strange man kiss, soon after Brian’s parents file a divorce. To make matters worse, Brian is on his way to visit his father when his plane pilot has a heart attack and dies, ironically, it just so happened that he taught Brian the basics of flying a plane, so Brian is able to keep the plane up until he crashes in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. It is a struggle for Brian, as he battles with nature to find food, water, and make fire and shelter. Brian is finally found and returned to his family, where he learns to not take small things for granted. A main conflict in Hatchet is a character vs. self conflict with Brian.
The conflict between Brian and himself is definitely HUGE.
In the beginning Brian does not have faith in himself and is sure he will die. Brian struggles to find a substantial source of food and water that DOES NOT make him throw up every other hour, he makes a fire and manages to catch birds and fish and is realizing to put important chores before slacking off. Brian is managing fine when a plane flies overhead and does not spot him; everything dies within himself so he gives up and attempts suicide. This is a tough time for Brian, fortunately he fails suicide and knows he must not give up. It is definitely a big conflict as he goes through the physical pain, mental pain, and emotional pain with his parents. This book is pleasurable and cleverly written and I recommend it to most everyone.
